The smart fortwo cdi is coming to Britain, Mercedes-Benz has revealed.
Right-hand drive versions of the model will be manufactured from February, with the vehicle going on sale sometime in 2009.
One if its main selling points is that it is currently the most environmentally-friendly vehicle in production in the world, emitting as it does just 88g/km.
It also offers excellent fuel economy, achieving 85.6mpg on the combined cycle.
This means it can travel the equivalent distance of Dover to Prague – 670 miles – without having to stop for fuel.
"The cdi gives customers the whole range of smart benefits when driving in and around the city, with the added bonus of low cost, long distance motoring," commented Dermot Kelly, managing director of Mercedes-Benz Cars.
"Our retailers are reporting heightened interest in the iconic two-seater; registrations are buoyant and we think the addition of the smart cdi to the range early next year will give added momentum."
The smart cdi will have a three-cylinder common-rail diesel engine which can produce 45hp.
