Ferrari ‘wouldn’t swap Massa for Hamilton’

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has sent out a Christmas message of support for his star driver Felipe Massa – claiming that he wouldn’t swap him for newly-crowned F1 champ Lewis Hamilton.

Montezemolo took time out from the Italian team’s presumably slightly-muted Christmas party to respond to the British driver’s recent vow that he didn’t want to join Ferrari and was a McLaren man for life.

Commenting that "usually it’s Ferrari doing the choosing", Montezemolo said: "Felipe is extremely popular, for the man he is, for the great driver he’s demonstrated to be, and for the beautiful way he lost this championship."

Acknowledging Hamilton’s stunning early impact on the sport, he insisted: "with all due respect, I wouldn’t change him with Felipe Massa".

Meanwhile, Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel has had little time for Christmas partying. He has topped the time sheets three times already this week during F1 testing sessions in the south of Spain.

Vettel raced for Red Bull ‘feeder’ team Toro Rosso last season and is many experts’ tip for the top.
