Reading Rockets complete England Basketball Double

image001Reading Rockets completed a great 2012/13 season by becoming D1 Mens Playoff champions after defeating Worthing Thunder (88-57) on Sunday at England Basketballs Final Fours Weekend 2013.

The league champions never trailed in the game, starting with a 16-2 run in the first five minutes that set the trend for the evening. They led 20-12 at the end of ten minutes and by halftime were up 37-24. Rockets had a huge third quarter that put the game to rest. The lead continued to grow from the start and when Worthing’s Joe Carter picked up an unsportsmanlike foul, followed by two technical fouls from Bud Johnston with 40 seconds left, the lead was 67-37. Both teams ran their benches throughout the final quarter as Rockets cruised to their fourth Playoff title.

Lewis Champion was selected as the Playoff Final Most Valuable Player for scoring a game-high 25 points in 22 and a half minutes. He went 7 of 10 from the floor (2 of 2 from outside the arc) and was 9 of 11 from the free throw line in a very efficient outing.  All nine Reading players scored and supporting Champion was Luke Nelson (21 points), Robbie Parker (14 points) and captain Ryan Lohfink (11 points).

Worthing’s big three of Hank Rivers, Bud Johnston and Kadiri Richard were all held to single figures, as were the rest of the Thunder squad. Richard did haul in a game-high 14 boards, however.

Newham Neptunes became Division Two Play-Off Champions after defeating Manchester Magic 85-66 in the first of three Playoff Finals at the Amaechi Centre on Sunday.

City of Sheffield Hatters became fifteen-time Division One Women’s Playoff champions on Sunday in a battle from beginning to end that saw them defeat a very determined Barking Abbey 70-57. Much like their semi-final win on Saturday, Sheffield had to overcome a second half double digit deficit to win and again, they dominated the final quarter. Hatters held Barking Abbey to 9 points in the last ten minutes while reeling off 22 of their own.
