Ford Fiesta top seller during March

The Ford Fiesta remained as the top selling car throughout March, although new car sales during the month suffered a concerning slump.

Figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders have revealed that new car sales in the UK fell by 30.5 per cent last month, with only 313,912 units being shifted.

This is a drop from 451,642 during March last year.

Some 20,654 of these sales were courtesy of the Ford Fiesta, making it the month’s most popular car, with the Vauxhall Corsa in second thanks to 14,993 sales.

Paul Everitt, chief executive at the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, said: "March new car registrations are a barometer of confidence in the economy, from businesses and consumers alike.

"The fall in the market shows that government needs to do more to boost confidence."

He added that a way in which the government could do this is through speeding up the probable introduction of the scrappage scheme to provide motorists with an incentive to buy a new car.

Fifth Gear highlighted in a recent review of the Ford Fiesta that the vehicle was the best supermini on the market that it had found.
