Ford Fiesta is May’s top-selling new car

The Ford Fiesta was the top-selling new car during May as registrations fell by almost a quarter during the month.

According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), sales fell by 24.8 per cent last month, with only 134,858 registrations made.

However, on a more positive note, the results do not fully see the benefits of the recently introduced government scrappage scheme, which only came into effect on May 18th.

Some 7,040 Ford Fiesta models were sold during May, which was just slightly more than the 6,693 Ford Focus vehicles exchanged.

This means that the Fiesta is still the best-selling vehicle during the year to date, with 48,182 sold between January and May.

Paul Everitt, chief executive of the SMMT, said: “While consumer confidence is improving, the UK motor industry is still facing a difficult economic climate.

“We have seen an encouraging start to the scrappage incentive scheme with 35,000 orders being placed since it was announced, although it will take time to feed into registration figures.”

Among the standard features fitted to Ford Fiesta models are driver and front passenger airbags, electric power-assisted steering and a rear spoiler.
