Car of the Week: Nissan Figaro

With an iconic design and appearance, the Nissan Figaro is one car that is guaranteed to turn heads up and down the high street. Originally only available in Japan, and known as the Nissan Cherry Stone, the popularity of the Nissan Figaro over here in Britain comes as a direct result of the huge influx of second-hand Japanese cars into the country throughout the late twentieth century.

First introduced to the world at the Tokyo Motor Show way back in 1989, the Figaro was released under the slogan ‘back to the future’. To align itself with this simplistic theme, the Figaro was only available in four colours, Topaz Mist, Emerald Green, Pale Aqua and Lapis Grey, with each colour representing a different season of the year. Now, in 2014, the Topaz Mist car is incredibly rare, as only 2,000 were ever produced in the first cycle. As you’d imagine, these sell for huge money in some instances.

Uniquely, the car’s design is actually based on the design of Shoji Takahashi, who won a competition to design the car with his sketches. Takahashi’s design was clearly incredibly popular and as a direct result of huge demand, the original production cycle was increased from an original run of 8,000 to 12,000. Even though this was the case, demand was still phenomenal, and prospective buyers had to enter a lottery to decide who would own Takahashi’s design.

As you might expect from a car that was so popular, it has had a place in popular culture on our screens here in the UK, and it even featured in an episode of a recent Doctor Who spin-off show. Other than this, it may be more recognisable to television viewers as the car in the title credits of The Andrew Marr Show (but only if you’re an early riser on a Sunday).

It isn’t just on the silver screen that the Figaro has risen to prominence, however, and it is now embedded in celebrity lifestyle, with celebrity owners ranging from Thomas Vermaelen (footballer for Arsenal) to Princess Eugenie and Vanessa Feltz (TV Presenter).

This particular model was declared manufactured in 1992, and still drives as if new. Fully equipped with leather seats, air conditioning, a CD player and an open roof, it’s one of the coolest cars on the market. If you’re interested, then check out the full listing today.
