To cover replacement parts or work done at a garage when you break down

What's Parts and Garage Cover?

Parts and Garage Cover, also known as Breakdown Repair Cover, helps you with the cost of repairs when your vehicle breaks down.

It covers vehicles of any age or mileage, and includes:

  • Up to £535 for repairs per claim.
  • Up to 4 vehicles covered on a single policy – just let us know which vehicles.
  • 5 claims each policy year, or 6 if you cover more than 1 vehicle on a joint or family policy.
  • Work paid for at a garage after a breakdown, like a new starter motor.
  • Cover for many of the spare parts used to fix your vehicle at the roadside, like a battery.

You’ll need to pay a £35 excess each time you make a claim.

How it works

Parts and Garage Cover kicks in after you call us out for a sudden electrical or mechanical breakdown.

You can claim up to £535 towards the expenses if:

  • We replace any parts covered by your policy, and
  • Your vehicle needs to go into the garage for further repairs.

We'll take you to one of our network of garages to carry out any work, or a garage of your choosing (depending on your level of cover).

Making a Parts and Garage Cover claim

After we've taken you and your vehicle to a garage, you need to call us before the garage starts any work on your vehicle.

If you use one of our network of garages, we'll pick up the bill with them directly. If you choose a different garage, you'll need to pay the bill and claim it back from us afterwards.

You'll need to pay an excess of £35 each time you claim.

Things to consider

You can't claim on Parts and Garage Cover if you:

  • Break down during the first 14 days of your policy.
  • Try to claim on any pre-existing vehicle faults. This includes faults picked up during a vehicle MOT or service.

Parts and Garage Cover isn't a vehicle warranty. You can only use it if you suffer from a sudden breakdown which we attend. If you have a warranty, check this policy meets your needs before buying.

Saving you money

Some of the most common causes of breakdowns we see are down to faulty mechanical or electrical parts.

If they can’t be fixed, the average costs of replacements and repairs* include:

  • Battery – £149
  • Engine – £331
  • Transmission – £417

But with Parts and Garage Cover to help cover the costs, you only need to pay the £35 excess for your claim.

I'm already a Member. Can I add it to my cover?

To add Parts and Garage Cover to your existing AA cover, call us now on 0343 316 4444 to get a quote and update your policy.

If you're new to the AA, you can add it to your cover when you buy online.

Your Parts and Garage Cover activates after a 14-day claim exclusion period. This means you can use it at any point after the first 14 days of your policy.

Can I cover my vehicle?

We cover vehicles of any age or mileage, but this doesn’t include caravans and other trailers, or kit cars.

Parts and Garage Cover can't be used for business vehicles (known as 'hire and reward'). That means we can't cover taxis, driving instructor cars, ice cream vans or parcel delivery, courier or haulage vehicles.

You’ll need to keep your vehicle serviced in line with your manufacturer’s recommendations, and this must be done by a suitable garage.

How many vehicles can I cover?

You can cover multiple vehicles on a single policy, depending on your level of membership:

  • If you hold personal, joint or family breakdown cover, you can cover up to 4 vehicles, as long as they're all registered at the same address.
  • If you hold vehicle cover, you'll be covered for the named vehicle on your policy.
What does pre-existing fault mean?

You can only claim on Parts and Garage Cover after you've called us out for a sudden mechanical or electrical fault that's stopping you from starting or continuing your journey.

If we've replaced some parts, or if your vehicle needs to go into the garage for further repairs, we'll help you cover the costs.

A pre-existing fault is one that you're already aware of but haven't got around to fixing yet. We don’t cover the costs for repairing these.

How do I make a claim?

To make a claim under your Parts and Garage Cover, you'll first need to call us for breakdown assistance.

If we can fix your vehicle at the roadside and you need a part replacement, you'll only need to pay the £35 excess to the patrol.

If a garage repair is needed, contact our claims helpline on 0344 579 0042 before the work is started. We'll confirm if it's covered once the problem is diagnosed. If it is, we'll authorise the garage to carry out the work.

We'll also help to make sure the process of getting your vehicle repaired is as simple, quick and hassle-free as possible.  We manage all aspects of the repair with the garage to get you back on the road as quickly as possible.

We can even arrange to pay the breakdown repair bill directly to the garage.

Just so you know, the garage must get confirmation of cover and authorisation from us before any repair work is started in order for you to be able to make a claim.

A claim on your Parts and Garage Cover can't be made for any faults that occur during the first 14 days after your agreed policy start date.

If you change your vehicle you also won’t be able to claim for it until 14 days after making the change.

Can I choose where I get my car repaired?

Where possible, we'll aim to repair your vehicle through one of our recommended garages – that way, we can pay the garage direct. Your claims advisor can tell you about them and let you know which garages are in the scheme.

But we can get your vehicle to a professional repairer of your choice if you prefer.
