Set on a tree-lined residential road behind high walls, you'll find all the trappings of a country-house retreat at this Gothic-style mansion set in four acres of impeccably maintained gardens. Although only a few minutes from the city, this tranquil place is enhanced further by the luxurious and sophisticated style. A collection of oil paintings adorns the walls, there are deep sofas and roaring winter fires, and yet the mood is thoroughly relaxed with a friendly but professional approach from staff. The intimate, formal restaurant continues the theme, with white-clothed tables, deep burgundy and gold soft furnishings, high ceilings and views over the gardens. The kitchen, under chef Chris Horridge, (ex Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons, see entry) shows pedigree, delivering innovative dishes created and presented with imagination and flair. Tip-top ingredients, interesting combinations, clean flavours and high skill deliver on the contemporary French repertoire. Perhaps slow-poached venison with papaya and celery and young nasturtium leaves, and to finish - Cornish pasta of lemon balm, ginger and lemon grass with kaffir ice. A beautifully presented extensive wine list offers good tasting notes.
