Description
Hidden away in a quiet valley on the fringe of Dartmoor and surrounded by idyllic gardens and peaceful parkland, this magnificent Jacobean manor house was once the home of the celebrated hymn writer and novelist Reverend Sabine Baring-Gould of 'Onward Christian Soldiers' fame. Seemingly untouched by time, the interior oozes understated charm and wonderful period detail, complete with oak panelling, beautifully ornate ceilings, stained-glass windows, large fireplaces, period furnishings and family portraits. The candlelit, panelled dining room continues the theme - it's a relatively intimate affair overlooking the pretty colonnaded courtyard, bedecked with flowers in summer and providing the perfect setting for alfresco dining. The kitchen takes a modern approach with the focus on top quality fresh local produce and seasonality, including Devon game, fish from the quayside at Looe, and herbs and vegetables from the hotel's own walled garden. Deceptively and intelligently simple themed dishes conceal a flair and confidence to allow clear, clean flavours to shine with the main ingredient taking centre stage. Take roast loin of venison served with celeriac, quince and braised cabbage, or perhaps sea bass with a squid and chorizo ragout, black olive tapenade and basil, while a warm honey parfait with fig tarte Tatin and raspberry sorbet might catch the eye at dessert. Service is formal, but with a friendly yet professional approach, while a good value wine list bolsters the package.
