Description
Secreted away down winding country lanes in the hamlet of Little Bedwyn, what was once the village pub is now a classy country restaurant of some note. The dining room - split into two sections - is bright and contemporary, featuring dark-leather high-backed chairs and neatly dressed tables laid with Riedel glasses and colourful Villeroy crockery. Service, led by Sue Jones, is friendly and relaxed, and husband Roger mans the stove. There's also a small garden at the rear for summer alfresco dining and aperitifs. Roger's approach in the kitchen is equally modern, with much emphasis placed on the freshness and sourcing of quality ingredients. Fish is caught on day boats landed at Brixham, while meat is from specialist farmers and butchers (perhaps 28-day hung Aberdeen Angus from Moray) and salads and herbs are specifically grown in North Devon. Thus Roger's cooking style is intelligently straightforward, allowing ingredients to shine with clean-cut flavours. Expect the likes of grilled diver-caught scallops with chorizo, pea purée and pea shoots, a roast faggot and caramelised suckling pig with apple sauce and perhaps a treacle tart to finish. A stunning wine list of passion and high quality, plus an excellent range of cheeses, provide exceptional accompaniment.

Imaginative amuse bouches precede magnificent foie gras/scallops/black pudding with PX reduction - foie gras better than Gordon's, smoother and less gamey. Perfect Welsh Black fillet, potato cake with the right amount of horseradish. Turbot had delicate wild mushrooms and mash. Cheese clock face from creamy chevre to powerful Epoisse. Great wine list that left wallet untroubled: big California Viognier, peppery Oz Shiraz. Care and imagination from enthusiastic, unstuffy team. Highly recommended!

Visited with 2 friends with whom I regularly visit restaurants in this area. This is undoubtedly the best we have visited in this area. All 3 courses, meat and fish, and the canapes, were delicious. The wines are above average price but the Pinot-Noir we chose was of a very good quality. In addition, the service was good and the atmosphere warm and friendly. I will be recommending this restaurant to my friends and colleagues and might even take my wife to it.

We dined at The Harrow for the first time on the strength of their website. We decided to have a fish and a meat dish as to experience two different types of food. We could not have been more disappointed in both dishes; the lamb was skimpy, 2 small chops, approximately 2 cm thick and width with a piece of rolled saddle of lamb with it. The dover sole, which I am not sure that it was, was over-cooked and the edges were curled and very fishy tasting, not very good.
