Description
This elegant, lovingly restored Victorian country house is situated at the end of a beech-lined drive, set in 11 acres of attractive gardens and parkland. Luxurious décor in the period style with fine antique furnishings, rich fabrics, oil paintings and deep sofas grace public rooms, while the elegant dining room continues the theme with views over the manicured lawns from comfortable chairs and white-clothed tables. Service is friendly but efficient, and sets the scene for chef-patron Peter Hauser's fine classical cuisine with its Austrian accent. Quality, fresh seasonal ingredients appear on Stock Hill's daily-changing menus, with meat sourced locally and fish fresh from Brixham, while herbs, fruit and vegetables come direct from the hotel's walled potager. Highly skilled technique, flair, balanced combinations and full-on flavours really deliver, and the Austrian flag denotes specialities. Take pan-cooked medallion of veal served with garden sorrel, white wine cream and a beetroot gâteau, and for dessert, perhaps a Baiser meringue filled with exotic fruits and served with a mango sorbet and vanilla cream.
