The Bell Inn
Description
Set deep in the heart of the Warwickshire countryside, this 17th-century inn has all the classic touches - open fires, flagstone floors, exposed beams and oak furniture - that make country pubs so charming. On a literary note, rumour has it that William Shakespeare contracted fatal pneumonia after stumbling home from a drink at the Bell in the pouring rain. In addition to the extensive list of wines and real ales, food is taken seriously here and the local suppliers of quality ingredients are credited on the menu. Typical dishes are cod on leek risotto with wholegrain mustard sauce and crispy onions; four-cheese pancake cannelloni; and chicken wrapped in Parma ham on roasted potatoes and parsnips with wilted spinach and a plum and orange sauce. Home-made desserts include ginger crème brûlée with a spicy pepper biscuit.
