Description
Organic beef farmers Mary and Bernard Harris preside over this rambling 17th-century free house, which stands in fine walking country just below Combe Gibbet and Walbury Hill. In addition to ramblers, the pub is a magnet for cyclists, hang gliders, shooting parties and organic food enthusiasts. An attractive terraced garden sets the scene for al fresco summer dining, in contrast to the heavily beamed interior with its old photographic prints and open winter fires. Almost everything on the menu is prepared using their own fresh produce; meats are 100% organic and butchered on the premises, which has earned accreditation by the Soil Association and won the RSPCA Good Business Award in 2007 for the UK Independent Restaurant category. The bar menu offers traditional English favourites, while the Cygnet restaurant serves dishes like Moroccan lamb tagine, salmon teriyaki, and the full range of organic steaks; vegetarian options are also a strength.
