The Crown
Description
An idyllic, 18th-century village pub in a picturesque setting next to the church. In 1857, according to an insurance policy, it also incorporated a saddler's shop, thatched stables and piggeries. After it closed in 2000, around 40 villagers raised enough money to buy and renovate it, reopening in 2001. It is now run as a village-owned tenancy, with real ales from Greene King, Elgood's and other local breweries. Menus offer a lunchtime selection of filled ciabattas; and you'll find bangers and mash, fish and chips, and contemporary dishes like pork and apple sausages, savoy cabbage, black pudding mash and onion gravy; and Mediterranean vegetable lasagne. The main menu might come up with steamed Scottish steak and ale pudding with horseradish crushed potatoes and swede purée; roast cod with olive oil mash, roast fennel and caponata; or chargrilled vegetable skewer with couscous, coriander and harissa sauce.
