The Wellington Arms
Description
A pretty whitewashed building with a large lawned garden surrounded by fields and woodland, an ideal setting for 35 free-range rare breed chickens, whose eggs are used in the kitchen and sold on the bar. There are beehives too, and herbs are grown just outside the kitchen door. Impressive menus show attention to detail, bread is baked by a craft baker, three fish deliveries arrive weekly direct from Brixham, all beef comes from Orkney, and Henwood Farm in Ashford Hill delivers fresh organic vegetables and salads daily. A simple lunch menu from Wednesday to Friday offers choices at a fixed price: potted pork rillettes with dill pickles could be followed by twice-baked goat's cheese soufflé on sautéed spinach, and completed with steamed chocolate and hazelnut sponge. At other times the blackboard may offer Cornish mussels steamed in olde English cider to start, and a main course of Orkney Island beef, shallot and red wine.
