Description
Housed in Plymouth's oldest building, this restaurant offers modern style in an impressive 15th-century setting that blends flagstones, beams, vaults and an ancient well with contemporary art. The Pilgrim Fathers may have eaten their last meal in England in the courtyard here, but it's a forgone conclusion it wouldn't have included modern dishes cooked with such flair. Think roast partridge served with bubble-and-squeak and a thyme sauce, or perhaps seared fillet of brill teamed with smoked salmon croquettes and a horseradish velouté. This is still a popular venue thanks to consistent standards and the owners' TV appearances: the Tanner brothers have also now opened a sibling contemporary brasserie - the Barbican Kitchen (see entry) - on the city's Southside Street. What a superb place. The lunch menu was terrific value and extremely good, puddings to die for, and the pork was delicious; not sure about the asparagus and poached egg, a little bitter for my taste. We will be back though.
