Honest-to-goodness gastro-pub-style food is the deal in this whitewashed old inn in a pretty village. The building dates from the 15th century and it really looks the business from its portico entrance to its traditionally maintained interior - think bare wooden tables, beams and open fires. A range of steaks, slow-roast leg of lamb with rosemary and cardamom jus, or toad-in-the-hole with bubble-and-squeak and a jug of gravy is the way to go. Before these could be a hand-made Scotch egg with spicy tomato compôte, or game terrine with chutney, and afterwards could come lemon meringue pie, or triple chocolate mousse with passionfruit sorbet. Sandwiches are available at lunchtimes too, including the award-winning steak version with triple-cooked chips and red onion marmalade.
