Butchers Arms

WOOLHOPE, Hereford, HR1 4RF

2 rosettes

A delightful half-timbered Herefordshire pub, the premises used to be a butcher's shop and is still very much a major part of village life, albeit now as the local pub. A wealth of character in timber beams, rustic bare tables, two open log fireplaces and bunches of hops makes for a homely feel, backed up by friendly and efficient service. Putting the bar in a central position leaves no doubt that drinkers are as welcome as diners and there's a good range of local beer, cider and perry available. That said, it's impossible to read the daily-changing modern menu without wanting to get stuck in. Chef-proprietor Stephen Bull has a knack of packing flavour into dishes which have broad appeal (passing walkers, regulars and travelling foodies alike) and all at reasonable prices too. Starters are also served as bar snacks; haggis fritters with piccalilli mayonnaise, perhaps, or a trademark soufflé made with Mrs Kirkham's Lancashire cheese and served with tomato sauce. The Butchers' oxtail pie is a no-brainer for some, but leave a chocolate, amaretti and caramel pudding-sized space for maximum satisfaction.
