Wookey Hole Inn

High Street, WOOKEY HOLE, Wells, BA5 1BP

1 rosettes

Not content to let Somerset's most popular tourist attraction bring in the punters, this village inn opposite the eponymous caves has crammed its interior with an unexpected Aladdin's cave of quirky art and objets referencing the Mediterranean, North Africa and Glastonbury. Its battery of local ales, ciders and perries, and tongue-twisting, delirium-inducing Belgian beers is guaranteed to promote conviviality, while the kitchen sends out an eclectic slew of European and international ideas, and it's all built on the sound basis of impeccably-sourced, often local ingredients. Chew Valley smoked trout with horseradish cream is a typical starter, while mains could see roast chicken breast stuffed with chilli and ginger and served with jasmine rice and coconut sauce. Finish with hot date and pecan pudding with toffee sauce and clotted cream.

Every meal I have ever had at this restaurant has been sensational. The food is always fresh and cooked to perfection, the portions are just the right size, and the mixture of tastes and textures is always unusual, delightful and perfect. The decor is relaxing and interesting. The service is great and the wines are always a treat. The to-die-for sticky toffee pudding is worth a visit alone. 10 out of 10!
