Right on the quayside, the Pier provides super-fresh seafood and, following an extensive redevelopment, you can dine in the new first-floor brasserie and take the air in the outdoor balcony seating. Try tiger prawn ravioli with a punchy shellfish sauce, followed by pan-fried halibut, cooked simply and accurately and matched with spinach and hollandaise sauce. Chargrilled Dedham Vale steaks are an alternative to the fishy options (with skinny fries and traditional accompaniments), but Harwich crab, lobsters fresh out of the salt-water tanks and skate wing with capers and parsley butter make for stiff competition. Finish off with crème caramel with Turkish salad and a pistachio and sesame snap.
