The Bear of Rodborough

Rodborough Common, STROUD, GL5 5DE

1 rosettes

This Cotswold hotel with its own vineyard is a handsome white-fronted beast, its identity emphasised by two stuffed bears in reception. A stone-walled dining room enjoys ravishing countryside views and a menu of thoroughgoing British modernism. The kitchen sometimes overdoes the complexity, but there are definite successes. These include tandoori-spiced mackerel with a salad of tomato, red onion and fennel, and mains such as lamb rump and sausage in tomato fondue with aubergine and yogurt dressing, or roast cod with curly kale in celery cream sauce. Dessert might be pleasantly aromatic jasmine and green tea delice with pistachio sponge and passionfruit sorbet, or cardamom-laced chocolate mousse with hazelnut parfait.
