Nonnas
535-541 Ecclesall Road,
SHEFFIELD,
S11 8PR
A shot of espresso at a high stool, authentic bustle all around, and Sheffield's Italophiles are immediately transported to another continent. Nonna's serves up a hit of Italian style with every visit - staff are Italian, and the cooking is the real deal, good full-flavoured home cooking, put together in a happy marriage of Yorkshire's finest fresh produce and specialist materials brought in from Italy for authenticity. All the pizza, pasta, bread, biscotti and ice cream are made from scratch every day, so you can tuck into anything knowing that this is a kitchen that is passionate about getting it right. Slow-braised oxtail with chargrilled piadini bread is a fine rib-sticking way to start, and you know that tagliatella salsiccia - tagliatelle with 8-hour slow-cooked sausage sauce flavoured with tomato, bayleaf, red wine and chilli - just has to be a winner. Secondi bring perfect Sheffield-meets-Italy fusion food in the shape of slow-cooked belly pork with black pudding polenta, and apple and rosemary dressing. Finish with Tuscan cantuccini biscuits to dip into a glass of sweet Tuscan vin santo, and leave via the deli to stock up on pukka specialities. Don't neglect the wines either, since the owners are an authority on the subject.

Really amazing night out to celebrate an anniversary. Great buzzy atmosphere, well priced with tasty Italian fayre. I had the venison - it was perfectly cooked and delicious combination of flavours. We had a great Tuscan wine that was recommended by the sommelier to match, and were really well looked after -thanks for a great memory, we will be back.
