The Rose & Crown

ROMALDKIRK, DL12 9EB

2 rosettes

In a tiny village with a Saxon church and the original stocks, this 18th-century inn is steeped in tradition. You're welcome to eat in the bar with its oak settles, antique chairs and crackling log fire, but at dinner many guests go for the candlelit oak-panelled dining room, where menus are built on local, seasonal produce. A starter of pan-fried pigeon breast with bacon and hazelnut crumble, pickled cabbage and rosemary sauce might be followed by a hearty main of pan-fried loin and braised shoulder of Hardwick mutton, peas, spinach, pan haggerty, turnip and mutton jus.
