Sitting a couple of miles inland from the north Norfolk coast, the Gin Trap is a 17th-century pub right on the Roman Peddars Way footpath - a great pitstop for modern day cyclists and walkers. Inside, it has all of the hoped for features - a rustic bar with a wood-burning stove in a huge fireplace, bare bricks and gnarled beams, while the nasty game-snaring devices that give the place its name are recycled as light fittings. If you prefer cosy, eat in the bar, otherwise there's the posher restaurant with candlelit, linen-clad tables, or the conservatory. Whichever you choose, prime local ingredients are the cornerstone of the kitchen's unfussy modern British food: Holkham Estate beef, smoked Applewood cheese, and home-made relish lift a classic burger to a higher level, while a rosemary and lemon crust adds a nice twist to roast rack of lamb served with Anna potatoes and red wine jus.
