Views over the Firth of Clyde offer a stunning backdrop to this substantial Victorian mansion, now a comfortable, stylish hotel. In the smart restaurant, friendly but informed staff cut through any hint of formality, and the kitchen works around a tranche of modern ideas, producing a starter of smoked cured beef with chargrilled asparagus and a vegetable spring roll. Next up, roast rump of lamb comes with pea and mint purée and potato rösti. Fish appears in the shape of baked whole sea bream with potatoes and olives, coriander salad and tartare sauce. To close, there's chocolate and raspberry torte with milk chocolate ice cream.
