Church Road, Stow-Cum-Quy, CAMBRIDGE, CB25 9AF
Situated in the miller's house, and overlooking the waterwheel and mill race, the refurbished Mill House restaurant makes the most of this feature, while putting on a distinctly contemporary country inn look. By night it's an intimate place with open fires and candlelight, cool jazz floating in the background. The menu keeps an eye on the seasons, uniting roast venison with parsnip ketchup, apple and hazelnuts, while butter-poached pheasant breast might arrive with its slow-cooked leg, pumpkin, granola and pickled pear. Fishy ideas run to roasted halibut with baby gem, salt-baked shallots, wild mushrooms and bacon, and for dessert, perhaps plum, vanilla and almond tart with plum ripple ice cream.
