Thoresby Park, OLLERTON, NG22 9WH
If you're weary of the identikit greige conformity of contemporary minimal restaurants, beat a path to Thoresby Hall for a jaw-dropping antidote. Its imposing creeper-hung façade beckons you to a Victorian fantasy of turrets and gables, and within are tapestries, chandeliers, weapons and family portraits. The Blue Grill is the top-end dining option, a room of soaring ceilings, ornate plasterwork and blue walls, but the kitchen's style is rather more up-to-date, reworking French classics in the modern British idiom. It starts with the likes of seared king scallops with chorizo, sweetcorn purée and roasted macadamia nuts, or butternut squah velouté with rabbit tortellini, haricots blancs and sherry. Good quality produce is again treated without too much fuss or elaboration in main courses such as a fish and meat combo involving roast turbot with crispy belly pork, langoustines, baby beetroot and leeks, and lemongrass. Otherwise, go for braised shin of beef with Bourguignon sauce, crispy dumpling and oxtail. Finish with cherry clafoutis paired with pistachio ice cream and Amaretto sauce anglaise.
