Sitting practically at the gates of the glorious medieval cathedral in the historic Tombland quarter, Tatlers is an enduring favourite of the Norwich dining scene. The characterful restaurant occupies a Victorian townhouse, sprawling through a trio of rooms done out with a heritage look involving scrubbed pine floors, bare rustic tables and rich claret walls. The kitchen takes an unpretentious, broadly modern British approach to its work, making good use of the season's bounty in daily-changing menus that might kick off with pan-fried chicken livers with lardons, wild mushrooms and a rich port jus, followed by pressed belly pork with mustard mash, piquillo peppers, clams, and apple and Calvados sauce. Finish with a Turkish delight crème brûlée with shortbread. There's a sister restaurant in Holt; see entry for Butlers.
