Malmaison Oxford

Oxford Castle, 3 New Road, OXFORD, OX1 1AY

1 rosettes

Oxford's old slammer is now leading a reformed life as a classy hotel, with seductive bedrooms in the cells and a moodily-lit brasserie in the former basement canteen. The cooking is a little bit French, a little bit British, and a little bit global. The feel-good results are starters like ahi (yellowfin) tuna tartare with avocado, pickled ginger, soy and lime dressing and wasabi, alongside chicken liver parfait and classic prawn cocktail. Moules marinières will sort out the Francophiles, while steaks and burgers seared on the grill, or pan-fried sea bass with chorizo, black olives, new potatoes and mussel vinaigrette please everyone. And for dessert, perhaps a Valrhona chocolate soufflé.
