The Empress

130 Lauriston Road, Victoria Park, LONDON, E9 7LH

2 rosettes

This Victorian tavern fits right into its buzzy Victoria Park location. Red Chesterfields, fashionable retro lighting and bare-brick walls are suitably à la mode, and when it comes to food, the kitchen (headed-up by an ex L'Ortolan man) delivers honest stuff made with good quality ingredients. A starter of chargrilled octopus comes with sobrasada (a Spanish sausage) and olives, while another combines ricotta cheese and beetroot with sesame and seaweed. Move on to pork belly with its crispy skin and meltingly soft meat, served with spelt risotto and garlic purée, or cod with fregola and salsa verde. Among desserts, a suitably wobbly vanilla pannacotta arrives with rhubarb and candied almonds.
