It is a rare kind of alchemy indeed that manages to combine such refined five-star status whilst remaining individual and charming. This is The Capital hotel, in a grand townhouse just around the corner from Harrods but away from the hustle and bustle, with liveried doormen to welcome you in, and family-run since it opened its doors in 1971. The finish on the inside is impeccable with pale wood panelling, high quality fabrics and smart furnishings filling the well-proportioned rooms, and a dining room which is both elegant and charmingly understated. On the menu are dishes built on classic French foundations, produced using diligently sourced materials. Start perhaps with terrine of duck and pork, partnered with a rum jelly and sourdough bread, or a velouté of Jerusalem artichokes and ceps. Next up, noisette of lamb with black olive gnocchi, roasted baby fennel and lemon thyme sauce, and to finish, caramelised pineapple flavoured with star anise, and served with vanilla cream and hibiscus sorbet.
