Description
Gary Rhodes' restaurant in the Cumberland Hotel at Marble Arch is an unapologetically high-toned venue, with two dozen dripping Swarovski chandeliers, ornate mirrors and rich velvet fabrics in tones of purple, black and taupe. This Kelly Hoppen designed room makes a diverting backdrop for the Rhodes cooking style, which matches European modes to a refined version of British demotic technique. Baked salmon, a beautifully timed portion, comes with a shellfish bisque and tortellini of smoked salmon and cucumber for one striking main course, while slow-cooked duck breast is partnered with home-style honey-glazed parsnips and a bay leaf-scented jus. Before that, you might have started with a meaty salad of roast lamb, glazed sweetbread, artichokes and a breadcrumbed quail's egg, while desserts aim to indulge with praline and chocolate terrine, counter-pointed with kumquats and a light crème fraîche sorbet. The service style in the restaurant is suitably professional, and the hotel is also home to Rhodes W1 Brasserie, which deals in simpler dishes in slightly less grandiose surroundings (see entry).

I chose the starter of scallop with pork. This dish consisted of just one scallop and a small piece of layered pork and fat. main course of black sea bream was delicious as was my sisters starter of mackerel. Her main course of Mallard was cold and raw. The waiter did change this but the replacement was worse and inedible. However the extras by way of bread and appetisers were delicious and meant we did not go away with empty stomach's and wallets.
