The Yew Lodge manages to walk the tricky tightrope of being both convenient and tranquil. It's situated just minutes from the motorway and East Midlands airport, but down enough country lanes to seem as if you're in the middle of nowhere. Inside staff are exceptionally welcoming. The formal looking Orchard Restaurant is popular with locals as well as hotel diners so there's a good atmosphere. Expect classic cooking with a few modern twists along the way; begin, perhaps, with Derbyshire game roulade with piccalilli and red onion, or tomato tortellini with ratatouille and balsamic jelly. Next up, chargrilled rib-eye is served with fried potatoes and shallots, and to finish there's a selection of English cheeses with chutney or textures of chocolate.
