The first of Jamie Oliver's blossoming chain to open north of the border, but doubtless not the last, the Glasgow Jamie's is smack-bang in the middle of the city in what was the GPO building. Through a grand pillared entrance is a vast space with high ceilings, large windows overlooking the square, and shelves stacked high with Italian foodstuffs. It's relaxed, unpretentious and full of energy - just like the man himself. The staff are passionate and hungry to impress. The antipasti boards are great for sharing, serving up excellent artisan cured meats, Italian cheeses and pickles, or start with something as richly comforting as porcini and chestnut mushroom soup. Rabbit ragu pappardelle is a delicious pasta option, while hearty main courses include British feather steak and burger Italiano. For dessert, ice cream comes in numerous tantalising flavours, or go for the creamy pannacotta with seasonal fruit compôte.
