milsoms Kesgrave Hall

Hall Road, Kesgrave, IPSWICH, IP5 2PU

1 rosettes

A buzzy bistro is at the culinary heart of Kesgrave Hall, a Georgian mansion in thick woodland just north of Ipswich. Inside, however, a boutique makeover in recent years has reinvented the place as a stylish boutique hotel with a pared-back modern look involving oak floors, pine tables, leather chairs and muted shades of cream and sage; outdoors, there's a spacious terrace with a retractable awning that keeps the place on the boil whatever the weather. The crew in the open kitchen are nicely in tune with the surrounding landscape, serving modern brasserie dishes along the lines of smoked haddock fishcake with a soft-boiled egg, pickled cucumber and lemon mustard mayonnaise, followed by braised Dedham Vale beef featherblade with carrot purée, cavolo nero and crispy bone marrow. Wrap it all up with pineapple tarte Tatin, with coconut sorbet, candied noodles and rum syrup.
