Hiding in woodland near a little village to the east of Ipswich, Kesgrave Hall is no monument to twee rusticity, but a sparkling-white boutique hotel with a portico and veranda seating out front. The Brasserie dining room is fitted with an up-to-the-minute open kitchen and plain wood tables. A quirk of the system is that you write down your food order and take it to the bar for service, which seems to run smoothly. An extensive menu of global modernism kicks off with starters in two sizes - 'ample' or 'generous' - for the likes of wagyu carpaccio with pickled kohlrabi and truffled crème fraîche. Spot-on timing elevates a main course of wild salmon with samphire, asparagus and broad beans into the big league, or there may be guinea-fowl in tomato consommé with Savoy cabbage and pancetta crisps. Go trad for afters with apple and sultana crumble and vanilla ice cream.
