The Yew Tree Inn
Hollington Cross,
Andover Road,
HIGHCLERE,
Newbury,
RG20 9SE
The Yew Tree Inn may no longer have 'Marco Pierre White' emblazoned on the building, but it remains a useful address in this moneyed part of Hampshire, with Highclere Castle as a near neighbour. This yew's roots are deep, in fact the whitewashed inn dates back to the 17th century, and inside the low-beamed ceilings and logs fires recall the past, whilst the interconnecting rooms are done out with a smart 21st-century sheen. This is a posh dining pub. There are real ales on tap, but the food is a big draw. Dining tables are laid with white linen and the menu sparkles with appealing British ingredients and preparations. Start with baked pheasants eggs, say, with asparagus and parmesan, before a main course such as rib-eye steak with hand-cut chips and béarnaise sauce, and a Pimm's jelly to finish, served with shortbread wafers.

Seven years ago I had the best meal of my life at this restaurant, last night I had the worst. My partner enjoyed her pollock but woke this morning with a headache and nausea; my pork dish featured a small, fatty, pork chop and an uncooked sausage.
