Ten years have gone by since the hit Channel 4 TV series Jamie's Kitchen, which saw Jamie Oliver take in 15 directionless youngsters and train them up in a professional restaurant kitchen to become chefs. That kitchen and that restaurant - a converted warehouse in Westland Place, N1 - are still there, and while the original apprentices have moved on (many to great things), the 10th set of apprentices are following in their footsteps and learning the trade in 2012. You might want to go along to lend your support to the cause, but the food is extremely good in its own right, and the place has a cool, relaxed vibe about it. Eat either in the ground-floor Trattoria, with its open kitchen, cocktail bar and a more rustic style of Italian cooking, or the basement Restaurant, which has a more modern, urban look and a menu of authentic Italian dishes which are slightly more refined. Fresh produce is sourced from the UK as far as possible, supplemented by top-quality Italian ingredients. The menu doesn't lie in describing a spring starter as 'the lightest potato gnocchi ripieni with broad beans, peas, mint and pecorino', while the chargrilled fillet of sea bass with Florence fennel, black olives, orange, mint, pine nuts and aged balsamic can't fail to take you off to sunnier climes with its fresh, summery flavours. Whatever you do, don't fill yourself up too much on the excellent home-made foccacia at the start, as the Amedei chocolate torte is just too good to miss.
