The Cornwallis Hotel,
Rectory Road,
Brome,
EYE,

The anticipation rises as you pass along the impressive lime tree-lined drive to the venerable old Cornwallis Hotel. And that's no surprise, since parts of the house date from the 15th century, and it is tucked away in 23 acres of grounds and topiary-filled gardens. Ancient beams, fireplaces and wood carvings set the mood inside, while the newly-refurbished Lexington restaurant is a romantic venue for uncomplicated modern British cooking. Ham hock terrine with piccalilli is a no-nonsense starter, while main course brings corn-fed chicken breast, stuffed with wild mushroom mousse, and partnered with garlic creamed potato, caramelised onion purée, wild mushrooms and jus. Chocolate and orange tart with Chantilly cream brings things to a close.
