Description
Originally built as a private residence, this grand stone house in the heart of fashionable New Town is these days a smart boutique hotel with an excellent restaurant. The spacious and chic dining room has handsome wooden floors and panelling, high ceilings with ornate cornicing and some neat contemporary touches including modern artworks on the walls. Darkwood tables are set with fine glassware, cutlery, linen napkins and candles, and staff provide attentive service. The French chef uses his classical training to transform local and seasonal ingredients into dishes with flair and individualism. The menu is sensibly concise with five or so choices per course. Smoked mackerel rillette with toasted sourdough bread and pan-fried Scottish rump steak with spring onion and pancetta mash, green olive and anchovy butter suggest the Auld Alliance is alive and well.
