The Horseshoe Inn
Edinburgh Road,
EDDLESTON,
Peebles,
EH45 8QP
The name is an acknowledgement of the fact that these premises, near Peebles in the border country, once housed a smithy. Now a stylishly decorated restaurant-(and-bistro-) with-rooms, the fine dining arm of the operation is done in gold and mustard, with modern artworks and elegant table-settings complete with outsized stemware. Professional service avoids any OTT flummery, and the menus ply an inventive version of modern Scottish cooking that naturally makes much use of fine local meats and seasonal produce. Dishes have a fresh, but pleasingly logical air, as when braised cuttlefish, subtly spiked with chilli, appears with squid-inked cauliflower purée, a pea casserole and sea beets. More braising is applied to a main-course duo of belly and cheek of Hawick pork, whilst sea bass is pan-fried and comes with creamed Swiss chard and braised leeks, sauced in confit tomato and persillade. Good dessert thinking sees a rectangular slab of chocolate financier offset with vanilla biscuit-crumbs and coconut cremeux, accompanied by an assertive passionfruit sorbet.

We had a wonderful experience from beginning to end; from the canapes and aperitifs, through courses each more sumptuous than the last, to the petits fours with our coffee. The staff were friendly and informative, making us feel welcome and ensuring we were comfortable without feeling intrusive. We had a very reasonable bottle of Chateau Musar to go with our meal, and were very satisfied. Flawless!

My wife and I celebrated our anniversary with a visit to the Horseshoe Inn and I cannot praise it highly enough. The staff were superbly professional and courteous, the food was out of this world, and the attention to detail and relaxed surroundings made this a dining experience we will never forget. Highly recommended.

Though the food is good, the wine is expensive, the service is poor and slow at the end. The cheese board choice has a limit of 4, which they don't tell you until it's too late. They insisted on deposit at reservation for a family meal and the deposit was not deducted from the final bill. Had we not spotted it we would have been overcharged. A disapointing end with unsympathetic staff.
