Description

Once the home of the village blacksmith, hence the name, the inn enjoys a tranquil location not far from Peebles in the majestic Scottish border country. Within an ambience of classical elegance - the pillared dining room has high-backed chairs, smart table settings and gilt-framed mirrors - some kind of celebration of the Auld Alliance is going on. Patrick Bardoulet brings the modern culinary techniques of his native France to bear on quality Scots produce, resulting in such dishes as dill-cured salmon with horseradish ice cream and toasted brioche, monkfish tail with leeks and butternut fondant in shallot and champagne sauce, and braised oxtail with Jerusalem artichoke and pied blue mushrooms. The intensity and creativity of the flavour combinations win many converts, and any lingering doubt that the chef has not been fully converted to Scottish traditions is dispelled in a serving of loin of lamb, with its tongue, liver and haggis, alongside turnip purée (the French idea of 'bashed neeps') and pearl barley. Cheeses and oatcakes are the alternative to sweet things such as pear parfait with liquorice cream and honey syrup.

We had a wonderful experience from beginning to end; from the canapes and aperitifs, through courses each more sumptuous than the last, to the petits fours with our coffee. The staff were friendly and informative, making us feel welcome and ensuring we were comfortable without feeling intrusive. We had a very reasonable bottle of Chateau Musar to go with our meal, and were very satisfied. Flawless!

My wife and I celebrated our anniversary with a visit to the Horseshoe Inn and I cannot praise it highly enough. The staff were superbly professional and courteous, the food was out of this world, and the attention to detail and relaxed surroundings made this a dining experience we will never forget. Highly recommended.

Though the food is good, the wine is expensive, the service is poor and slow at the end. The cheese board choice has a limit of 4, which they don't tell you until it's too late. They insisted on deposit at reservation for a family meal and the deposit was not deducted from the final bill. Had we not spotted it we would have been overcharged. A disapointing end with unsympathetic staff.
