Description
The unassuming converted village blacksmiths house takes on a very different personality on the inside. Gone are any thoughts of its past life, for inside it is lavishly furnished with gilded mirrors and smart fabrics. There is a stylish bar-bistro and a fine dining restaurant, Bardoulet's, named after the chef-director of this rejuvenated inn. The setting is luxurious and bold, mixing old and new to create a comfortable environment in which to sample the cooking of Patrick Bardoulet. The French origins of the chef are reflected in the menu and high quality Scottish produce figures large. A thin tart of crab and scallops is served as a starter with a spiced mango tartar, sweet beetroot and orange oil, while marinated foie gras is set in a rhubarb jelly and served with gingerbread. This is inventive and creative food. Main-course Scottish beef, fillet and shoulder, comes with creamed wild mushrooms and morel jus, and the originality continues at dessert: crème caramel with pecan cake, praline and ginger sorbet. Service is knowledgeable, helpful and attentive.

We had a wonderful experience from beginning to end; from the canapes and aperitifs, through courses each more sumptuous than the last, to the petits fours with our coffee. The staff were friendly and informative, making us feel welcome and ensuring we were comfortable without feeling intrusive. We had a very reasonable bottle of Chateau Musar to go with our meal, and were very satisfied. Flawless!

My wife and I celebrated our anniversary with a visit to the Horseshoe Inn and I cannot praise it highly enough. The staff were superbly professional and courteous, the food was out of this world, and the attention to detail and relaxed surroundings made this a dining experience we will never forget. Highly recommended.

Though the food is good, the wine is expensive, the service is poor and slow at the end. The cheese board choice has a limit of 4, which they don't tell you until it's too late. They insisted on deposit at reservation for a family meal and the deposit was not deducted from the final bill. Had we not spotted it we would have been overcharged. A disapointing end with unsympathetic staff.
