Description
Kinnaird is all you might imagine a Scottish country estate to be, from the rugged elegance of the house's Georgian façade, to the 7,000 acres of prime Perthshire countryside. Everything about this imposing baronial mansion is built on a grand scale and its position overlooking the wooded valley of the River Tay is breathtaking. This is hunting-shooting-fishing country but the hotel provides a bit of luxurious cosseting however you choose to spend your time. The public rooms are traditionally furnished with considerable elegance, so fine antiques and an impressive collection of art fill inviting lounges which are warmed by roaring log fires. The dining room is an elegantly refined space, with ornate Italian frescoed walls, marble fireplace, a central chandelier and views out onto the garden through the huge bay windows. Jacket and tie are required at dinner, but given the formal silver service and grand scale of the place, that doesn't seem unreasonable. The food is focused on seasonal local produce and classically-based ideas meet modern sensibilities on fixed-price lunch, dinner and tasting menus (there's afternoon tea as well). Langoustines with an oyster tempura and oyster velouté is a luxuriant start, followed by lamb shank and loin with Puy lentils, kohlrabi and thyme jus, and finishing with hot passionfruit soufflé with chocolate sorbet.
