Description
Even without the clue in the name it might be possible to guess this restaurant had a moneyed former life - it was indeed a bank, and the work of Washington Brown no less, who also designed the Caledonian Hotel in Edinburgh. The ornate, red sandstone listed building has a prominent position on the main street. Today, the original wood panelling and cornices can still be seen in the charming, genteel atmosphere of the dining room, with its wooden floors, lofty ceiling and print-adorned walls. Run by a husband-and-wife team, the kitchen takes a fittingly serious approach to cooking. Its accomplished classical French-influenced cuisine delivers the likes of mussel, bacon and leek croustade, followed perhaps by slow-roasted neck of lamb with olive mash, and finishing with lemon tart with Greek yogurt and honey or Scottish cheeses.
