This old water mill, which is still in working order, in the tranquil Devon countryside is now a relaxed and intimate country house. Its position on the edge of the Dartmoor valley means the simple pleasures of a bracing walk are never far away, or you might take advantage of the six miles of on-site angling before heading back for tea by the crackling log fire. Charming public areas with traditional furnishings, deep stone walls and low beams are understated, as is the spacious sage-green dining room. Excellent local produce is treated with respect in elegant and refined food such as smoked haddock kedgeree with curry cream and a lightly poached egg, followed by fillet of South Devon beef with braised oxtail, wasabi mash and caramelised shallots. Finish with a selection of West Country cheeses or warm ginger cake with banana jam and passionfruit.
