Widbrook Grange was originally built as a model farm in the early 1700s and its architectural heritage is reflected by low walls containing bee bowls on both sides of the house. It sits in 11 tranquil acres on the outskirts of the ancient town of Bradford-on-Avon, close to the Kennet and Avon Canal, and is run with a homely, easygoing approach. The intimate fine-dining Medlar Tree Restaurant is housed in what was once the milking parlour, but now stands out from the herd with its soft-focus décor of summery pastels and coral-hued high-backed chairs. Seasonal produce foraged from the gardens bolsters fine ingredients from local suppliers to provide a British backbone to a menu of up-to-date ideas. Peppered roast quail and duck confit could be served with stem ginger stuffing, spiced sweet potato purée and tzatziki, while braised featherblade of local beef gets the hearty company of dauphinoise potatoes, Huntsman sauce, swede purée and onion rings.
