Dating from the 17th century, this former coaching inn is idyllically set in a charming Cotswolds village on the bank of the River Coln. Oil paintings are a feature in the restaurant, which opens on to a courtyard for summer dining. The kitchen takes a broadly modern approach, and there's plenty to appreciate on the varied menus, from starters of confit duck and mushroom terrine with a soy and sesame dressing, or seared scallops with pea purée and quail's eggs, to main courses along the lines of rump of local lamb with pancetta, buttery mash and Savoy cabbage, or baked lemon sole with caper potatoes and olive beurre blanc. Desserts have included rich chocolate delice with fruit compôte and clotted cream.
