The City Arms

This building was once the city gaol (Judge Jeffreys passed sentence here) and original features include barred windows, a solitary cell, chains and locks. The pub offers traditional standards of quality and service, and its choice of seven real ales, draught ciders and menus of fresh local produce. The bar menu might offer grilled sardine fillets with a sweet chilli, coriander and garlic dressing; whole baked camembert; and chicken liver and apricot brandy pâté. The specials board changes weekly and there are also special events, such as carvery demonstrations.
