Surrounded by landscaped gardens and an ancient deer park, the White Hart stands within the courtyard of the magnificent 14th-century Dartington Hall. Ancient tapestries hang above the original kitchen fire in the main restaurant, recently fully refurbished, which is floored with flagstones and oak, lit by gothic chandeliers, and furnished with limed oak settles. Otter real ales are available in the bar, again with a fire, and there's a patio for the warmer weather. The daily changing bar and restaurant menu uses fresh, seasonal ingredients from South Devon and the estate itself - single-suckled beef, grass-reared lamb, additive-free and free-range chickens and eggs, and fish. Typical dishes might be grilled field mushroom burger with caramelised onions, beefsteak tomato and goat's cheese; confit of free-range Crediton duck leg with apple and celeriac purée, and cranberry and balsamic compote; and grilled salmon fillet with sautéed spinach and garlic, and herb butter sauce.
