Part of the splendid 14th-century Dartington Hall estate and deer park, the White Hart is surrounded by landscaped gardens. Ancient tapestries hang above the original kitchen fire in the main restaurant, which is floored with flagstones and oak, lit by gothic chandeliers, and furnished with limed oak settles. Local Devon real ales are available in the bar, again with a fire, and there's a patio for the warmer weather. The daily-changing bar and restaurant menu uses fresh, seasonal ingredients from south Devon and the estate itself - single-suckled beef, grass-reared lamb, additive-free and free-range chickens and eggs, and fish. Typical dishes might be pan-fried free-range Crediton chicken livers with pancetta, pine nuts, mixed leaves and Madeira dressing, followed by rump steak with anchovy and chilli butter, slow-roast tomatoes, roasted shallots and French fries. The pub also has its own cinema and hosts a variety of music and literary events.
