The Hankridge Arms

Hankridge Way, TAUNTON, TA1 2LR

Although not a huge town, Taunton has expanded considerably since this former farmhouse was built in the 16th century. Eventually becoming derelict, it was rescued by Blandford brewery Hall & Woodhouse, whose expert attentions ensured that many of its original features remain visible. Starters on the wide-ranging menu include continental meat platter; and deep-fried salt and pepper squid; mains could be poached fillet of West Country salmon; rib-eye and sirloin steaks; pan-fried escalope of veal; and wild rocket, mushroom, spring onion and sun-blushed tomato risotto. Mature gardens and a courtyard could, for some, be welcome relief following a shopping expedition next door.
