In a sleepy village tucked beneath the South Downs amid a maze of the narrow lanes, this 250-year-old pub has been transformed into a stylish modern country inn. Being so handy for polo at Cowdray Park and racing at Goodwood, it makes a great watering hole at the end of a hard day's entertainment. Hand pumps in the smart wooden-floored bar dispense the likes of local Harvey's and Adnams ales, while menus make good use of seasonal produce from local suppliers to create some imaginative and good value dishes. Perhaps start with mussels grilled with garlic and herb butter, then follow with confit duck with dauphinois, green beans and red wine jus, and round off with sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream. Lighter options include Sussex cheddar and pickle sandwiches, ham, egg and chips and smoked chicken, avocado, chorizo and tomato salad. Super terrace and garden for summer alfresco meals.
