The inn was originally a humble ale house called the Winchelsea Arms, and belonged to the Earl of that title who lived nearby. It is thought that its current name stems from a home-brew invented by a resident publican during the 18th century, when the pub sign advertised 'Fine Ram Jam'. Sadly no recipe survives, so its ingredients remain a mystery. Today's informal café-bar and bistro, with a patio overlooking orchard and paddock, welcomes visitors with its comprehensive daily-changing menu. Dishes might be potted smoked mackerel; spicy crayfish and Thai style salad; chicken Caesar salad; lasagne; finishing off with crème brûlée or apple and blackberry crumble.
